The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada is proud to host a screening of “Pressing On: The Letterpress Film”. This is a documentary on the 500-year-old craft of letterpress printing, harkening to the days when skilled craftsmen used moveable type slugs to artfully set each character with etched images such as woodcuts on early presses.

Once essential to communication, the process is now in danger of being lost as its caretakers age. From self-proclaimed basement hoarders to the famed Hatch Show Print, “Pressing On: The Letterpress Film” explores the question: why has letterpress survived?

Local artisans Clawhammer Press, Feast Letterpress, Ochre Lea, and DeAnne Bedier will be showcasing letterpress goods. Edmonton’s Ochre Lea will have a tabletop press on display and will do some public print demonstrations.
